Australian Shepherds have owned us for the past 20 years . Our son starting showing Aussies in Junior Showmanship when he was 10 years old and now he is 29 and showing financial perspectives & real estate ( my how things change ) !
Having as many dogs as we have ( presently we have 22 ! ) can be a lot of work & expense , but they are our four - footed " fur kids " and we love them !
Our dogs vary in ages and about half of them are what we call veterans & seniors, but we usually have a few that are younger "show " hopefuls or versatility prospects.
My hubby is not " into " the show stuff. He went to a few shows with my son many years ago , but was not smitten with the show scene. He'd rather stay home and feed the troops on those rare occasions that I decide to pack up and head to a dog show. I don't show in conformation as much as I use to, but I suppose I'll continue to dabble in it while trying my hand in other venues . Lately it's been mostly agility training because a training facility ( within 20 miles of our home ) was opened a few years ago & the dogs are crazy about going to class .
We are on three fenced acres , which the dogs enjoy on a regular basis. The young "escape artists" generally play in the smaller and much more secure " doggy play yard " . . . . it is a fun place for them to hang out. Within the dog play yard there are things to help keep a young Aussie's mind & body occupied. We've brought in cement culverts to run through & jump on top of, some kiddie pools to get wet in & lots of toys to bury in the sand. They also have a lookout platform with a ramp to run down ~ it's a sort of doggy " jungle-gym " we made. Aussies love activity !
All of them are in & out of our house at different times of the day / week / month ~ depending upon what is going on ( heat cycles, training classes , shows , etc., etc. ). We have a separate building with air-conditioning that we use to house some of the dogs at night & when the weather gets too hot for extended daytime outings. Otherwise they can be found playing in the yard or lounging in the house. Although, they do love their nice cool stucco building ( or maybe it's just the air-conditioning in general ...... grin ) .
Occasionally one or two of the Aussies will slip out into the pasture behind our house & " work the cows ". It can be quite impressive to watch these untrained stock dogs do what comes naturally to them. Mostly it's a reminder of their true herding heritage and what these dogs were originally bred to do ......... work livestock !
Prospective buyers have asked me about gender preference. I like both the males & the females ....... but I tend to lean a bit more towards the males. The reason is :
MY BOY DOGS THINK I AM GOD MY GIRL DOGS THINK THEY ARE GOD
So generally, my boys worship me and my girls want me to worship them. Typical woman behavior , huh ? < grin >
Learn as much as possible about the Australian Shepherd BEFORE adding one to your home. Whether it is your first Aussie or your second Aussie, each is very individual in their personal temperament , but any could begin showing herding dog / Aussie behavior that you must be aware of and willing to work with.
