SOME AUSSIE INFO & TIPS :
Australian Shepherds are used daily on many farms & ranches . Aussies are a breed that can think on their own & are capable of carrying out herding tasks without the instruction of an owner, but accomplishing a task for the praise of their owner is central to their being. They live & love to do things with "their people". The most ideal owner for an Aussie would be one that is up to the challenge of keeping an intelligent dog occupied.
On the whole, this breed is intelligent, loyal & has a desire to work. Some Aussies have a higher "drive" than others and are better suited in an environment that will offer it daily chores. It is a versatile dog and can be trained to perform in many different activities or it can be happy functioning just as a family member. Aussies can become protective of their family members & their property. Extra socialization at a young age may keep this to a minimum. Due to their herding instinct, the Aussie may also feel compelled to control moving cars, running children & animals, but can overcome these urges with the proper supervision & diversion.
BEFORE you add an Aussie to your family, make sure the Aussie is compatible with your lifestyle. Links to the "Parent Clubs" for the Australian Shepherd breed are listed at the bottom of this page.
* * * The best advise I can give for choosing a "good breeder" is to look for health clearances on the parents of puppies .
BEWARE of the breeder who cannot show you passing health certificates on the parents OR ELSE on the grandparents . . . and yet they would require you to have these done on the puppy in order to get a replacement .
A breeder who is truly concerened about their breeding program, will have their breeding stock checked for health issues that could affect future generations. You will pay no more for a nice puppy from a "responsible breeder" than you will from someone who just "breeds dogs". The only difference is that you will probably not be allowed to pick your puppy the moment it is born. Vet examinations and breeder evaluations will determine quality & possibly price.
A concerned breeder will not sell you a dog, simply because your credit card was approved. A truly concerned breeder will ask you questions about your experience with dogs & about your lifestyle. The goal of the responsible breeder is to place the puppy or dog into the correct home environment, with the right personality types.
Shop around. Make sure your puppy not only comes with a health guarantee, but make sure that the guarantee is backed up with proof of healthy ancestors. If health certificates have not been obtained on one or both parents, try to verify health clearances on the grand parents & other ancestors. Verification of the health clearances can be found in the OFA database by visiting their website & entering the name of the dog in the search box at the top of the page. A few health clearances , such as Penn-Hip, will not show up on the OFA website, but the breeder can give you a copy of the Penn-Hip report on parents & or grandparents that were x-rayed & evaluated.
Overall, the Australian Shepherd is a healthy breed. There are some problems to watch for, which most responsible breeders are aware of. Generally, responsible breeders will not breed females that are under 2 years of age. Ideally, selecting a puppy from lines that are long-lived and relatively free from disease ( cancer, epilepsy, hip dysplasia, hereditary cataracts, etc. ) would be your best bet. Although even the most well-intentioned crosses can produce a problem or two, it is best to deal with a responsible breeder who will want to rectify the problem. A good breeder will eliminate certain dogs from the breeding pool or will not repeat a cross that was known to produce problems. They may also compensate the buyer with a replacement dog or refund of purchase money / vet bills.
Aussies are super companions ! They are happy & loyal dogs . They are smart and easily trained. They are loving & sensitive. They are entertaining & versatile. But they are not a breed of dog for just anyone. Too many people are drawn to the Aussie for it's good looks & intelligence. They are unaware that the Australian Shepherd needs to be a helper. The Aussie is most happiest when it has been taught how to please it's owner with small tasks . Aussies make excellent employees when properly trained , but should never be allowed to own their own business ! They are just way too smart to be satisfied as a small business owner . . . . . a corporate take-over is sure to ensue < grin >.
Each Australian Shepherd has his own personality & temperament. You should allow your breeder to help you select your new pup or dog based upon the personality & drive of the pup or dog. You may be drawn to a certain color or markings, but you may be passing up the better dog for your desires. Depending upon whether you are looking for a competition dog or just a family companion, your choice will be further narrowed if you are stuck on a color or sex.
Aussies are popular competitors & they excel in their roles due to the hard work and dedication of their owner ( & / or handlers ). If you are willing to take the time ( and spend the money ) your Aussie can wear many different hats !!
